The Effect of Varying Screen Times During the Pandemic on the Stress Levels of Senior High School Students

  Abstract
The researchers conducted a study entitled “The Effect of Varying Screen Times During the Pandemic on the Stress Levels of Senior High School Students” with the aim to discover the correlation between the screen time of senior high school students and their stress levels. Through this, the researchers wished to discover the effect of the students’ screen times on the stress levels they experience and inversely, the effect of the students’ stress levels on their amount of screen time. They also focused on the stress level trend of students if online distance learning is involved, as well as if there were significant differences between the stress levels among the students of five different schools, given their varying screen times and contrasting online class schedules and workload. The scope of the population only included senior high school students in the Philippines whose classes are currently online. Additionally, the study was limited to only observing the stress level aspect of the students’ mental health and wellbeing. The method used by the researchers was by distributing an online questionnaire which utilized questions from the New Hampshire's Department of Health and Human Services perceived stress scale, with the addition of one question about the students’ average screen times during the pandemic, combining online classes and leisure usage time. The results revealed that there is only a minimal correlation between the amount of screen time and stress level score of students. However, there are significant contrasts in the means of the stress levels of students from different schools. Thus, given how all the students were from private schools around Metro Manila, Philippines, it is recommended that future researchers widen the scope of participants by including or focusing on students from public schools within or outside of the region. In addition, considering that the online distance mode of learning is not guaranteed to be permanent, the researchers suggest conducting a study that would center on the various aspects of the students' wellbeing, but during offline or face to face mode of learning.
